Roofs often play important roles in the character of a project. In addition to its aesthetic aspect, it has important functions in protecting and closing the structure. Of the existing types of coatings, pitched roofs are the most common in homes and buildings all over the world, so it is necessary to make sure that they are within the parameters specified in the technical standards.

The structures that cover the buildings and protect the interior from all weather conditions such as rain, wind and sunlight are called roofs. Depending on the identity of the project, they can take on different formats and even new functions: they can be flat, inclined, in various planes, or they can be visited and vegetated. Of this variety, pitched roofs are the most preferred in residential architecture and even building roofs, given their practicality and low implementation costs.

The traditional pitched roof basically consists of two elements, the frame and the tile. Usually the structure consists of wooden or metallic parts, while there are various types of tiles such as fiber cement, ceramic, aluminum, concrete, among others. Each of these materials has cost, maintenance and workmanship characteristics and performance to create thermal comfort. Roof slope is determined by tile types.
Roofs can be the sum of several small parts such as ceramic tiles, concrete and PVC, or they may also be a combination of large plates such as metal or fiber cement. Each has its own characteristics such as weight and fixing methods, but the general rule is the smaller the tile, the greater the possible slope. At the same time, regardless of the type of tile, the way to calculate the slope of the roof is the same: a ratio between length and height.

Geometrically, there is a vertically associated value for every 1 horizontal unit, resulting in a right triangle where the hypotenuse is the plane of the roof and the ratio of a to b is the percentage of the slope:

• Thus, a straight line of 1 meter horizontally is determined to reach the roof slope,
• From this straight line, the direction is changed vertically, going up as much as desired, for example 10 centimeters on a roof with a slope of 1%,
• Finally, it is closed with a straight line forming the gable roof slope.

There are manufacturer standards and norms on the market that regulate the use of each of these materials, and it is important to follow the guidelines set out to ensure both the correct flow of water and proper fixation against the action of winds. For example, the average slope for ceramic and concrete tiles is 30%, while fiber cement roofs and metal tiles slope between 9% and 10%. Improperly used tiles can cause leaks, short circuits, roof opening and other accidents.
